This is my college magazine's front cover, which I produced using GIMP. I based the main theme of the magazine (including colour schemes, fonts and layouts) on the typical American college/university which involves the classic college font and a simple two tone colour scheme.
I have placed the main cover lines in the 'left third' of the cover to enable visibility of the contents when staked in a shop. The Masthead uses the classic college font and the yellow and blue colour scheme to give the magazine the American feel as mentioned above. The fonts used in the Masthead and throughout the cover are in Sans serif font to make the front cover have a simpler feel. The Lead is in big, bold letters making it more eye catching and I have made a white background (almost a banner) to the Lead which has overlapped the Image which also makes the Lead more eye catching. The text above the masthead is the skyline which is my magazine's slogan that is catchy and explains roughly what the magazine is all about.
I took a medium close-up shot of a friend to use as the main image. After resizing the photo onto a a4 sheet I had to crop the image to enable me to create a layer in GIMP of just his head and body. This made it easier for me to bring his head in-front of the Masthead. After looking at various magazines in my research that have used this subtle 3d technique, I decided to use it. I then I browsed through Dafont's specific 'college' fonts to find the correct look for the magazine. I then resized the text, changed the colours and added on my bar code, date and price to finish it off.
